Description

Anyone with a Mitsubishi 2 button remote key might have already experienced the pain of the poorly designed, weak plastic casing they have. For me it was a 2010 Outlander, but from what I've seen a lot of Mitsubishi's between 2005 to 2015 have this same key. Same design. Same failures!

My key ended up breaking off my keyring. A common failure that happened to both keys. Then the casing near the blade started to fail as well. The entire assembly then came apart after the screw broke through the plastic. My options were running out after holding it all together with electrical tape.

Now I could have probably bought a cheap replacement housing online, but they're pretty average if you believe the reviews. Get one from a dealer? I'd be shelling out hundreds of dollars! Besides, there's no fun in either of those options, so I designed a housing that holds the existing key in place, feels good in the hand, and is able to hold together even the most damaged key... like mine! I think it looks pretty tough too :)

The key slides into a hole in the front of the "Key Holder Bottom.stl", and it secured by the two "Top Lower" and "Top Upper" components to hold it firmly in place. The "Top Bottom" stops the key from coming out of the housing, and the "Top Upper" holds the top of the key firmly, holding the blade in place when that section of the key is either weak or failing. If it hasn't failed yet, this will help to prevent that.

4 x M3x6mm screws hold it all together. I'd recommend pre-screwing each prior to putting the key in and the covers on top. Just so you know the threading is right.

100% infill. Supports if you like smoother curves on the base, but you probably don't need it.

Pricing assumptions and exclusions

USD: ($6 setup + $3 finishing + filament weight × assumed spool cost × 1.25 waste allowance + print hours × $2.50 × material time factor) ÷ 0.65. Rounded up to the next $0.50.

Assumed spool costs per kg: PLA $25, PETG $30, ASA $40, ABS $30, TPU $45, Nylon $65, PA-CF $95. Time factors: PLA/PETG 1.0, ASA/ABS 1.2, TPU 1.6, Nylon 1.4, PA-CF 1.5. These are proposed shop rates, not measured production costs.

Design work, test fitting, hardware, shipping and tax are additional where needed. Multi-file sets may need several prints. Use actual sliced weight and time when available. Final pricing is confirmed in writing.
