Description

Update (2/26/21): I've uploaded V3 files. These are similar to the previous version, but the main shaft is hex shaped versus the older "D" style shaft. I noticed that the D style would develop slop in the pawl, so turning the knob to close the door would need more than the 90 degree angle. The shaft is still press fit into the knob and glued into place, but it is meant to be printed on it's side for better strength.

The latch that closes the hazard triangle compartment on my B6 A4 Avant had broken. But unlike others where the catch breaks, the knob on mine broke. It had been previously repaired with glue, so instead of gluing it again only for it fail shortly I decided to use my 3D printer. So I used GrMechEng's assembly which is comprised of three parts, the catch, shaft, and knob. The catch doesn't have a tab like the original Audi part that only allows 90 degree of rotation. However, matthewlaberge's design of the catch does retain this feature. Thankfully, he uploaded the STEP file, so I was able to modify it to accept the shaft from the other design.

Assembly:
1. Apply glue to hole in knob and insert shaft.
2. Slip knob and shaft through hole in Audi cover.
3. Connect catch using a M3 flathead screw, the hole in the shaft is sized appropriately. But if necessary can be drilled out slightly. Done!

Note: Shaft may need to be scaled down slightly to ensure a snug fit.

Print price estimates

Planning prices for one print, not a final quote. Defaults use a size allowance inferred from the part name, not a measured or sliced model. Filament suitability must be confirmed.

FilamentUSD / printApplication notes
PLA$21.50Indoor prototypes; not a default material for hot vehicle interiors.
PETG$21.50General-purpose candidate; heat and creep need review.
ASA$23.50Candidate for UV exposure; verify temperature and geometry.
ABS$22.50Enclosed printing; review application and dimensions.
TPU$26.00Flexible designs only; not a substitute for rigid materials.
Nylon$26.00Moisture, tolerances and application require review.
PA-CF$28.00Filled nylon; abrasive filament and fit need review.
Pricing assumptions and exclusions

USD: ($6 setup + $3 finishing + filament weight × assumed spool cost × 1.25 waste allowance + print hours × $2.50 × material time factor) ÷ 0.65. Rounded up to the next $0.50.

Assumed spool costs per kg: PLA $25, PETG $30, ASA $40, ABS $30, TPU $45, Nylon $65, PA-CF $95. Time factors: PLA/PETG 1.0, ASA/ABS 1.2, TPU 1.6, Nylon 1.4, PA-CF 1.5. These are proposed shop rates, not measured production costs.

Design work, test fitting, hardware, shipping and tax are additional where needed. Multi-file sets may need several prints. Use actual sliced weight and time when available. Final pricing is confirmed in writing.
