Description

This is a replacement window bushing for a 1995-1999 Subaru Legacy window slide. My friend’s car windows weren’t going up or down, and one had fallen into the door. The bearings on the right and left passenger doors were shot. From my searches, there weren’t any bushings being sold for this common issue in old Subaru windows so I took some measurements and made this in Tinkercad. It was printed with PETG and at 100% infill using walls only, to strengthen it by printing many circles instead of having just a few walls and infill.

Below I’ve outlined the steps I took to replace the window bushings:

1. Lower the window to 90% down. Remove the two nuts connecting the rail to the window regulator. These nuts can be accessed through the hole in the door. Once the nuts are off, remove the rail.

2. There is a tab bent into the rail on the rear-facing side to keep the bushings from sliding out. I used a small crescent wrench to bend the edge of the rail until I could slide the bushings in and out.

3. Then lower the regulator mechanism all the way and use channel locks to force the new bushings onto the window regulator.

4. Slide the rail back onto the new bushings. You’ll need to move the regulator up a bit to get enough clearance. Then lower it back down and use the small crescent wrench to bend the metal tab back up once the rail is in place on the regulator.

5. Adjust the window regulator back to 90% down. Line up the window bolts with the holes in your freshly repaired regulator and reinstall the nuts securely.

6. Grease the rail where the bushings will make contact.

I hope this helps someone. Compared to replacing a full regulator it saves a ton of time and money.

Note: If the window falls all the way down, make sure you get the plastic guide back onto the frontmost part of the window. It will likely have fallen down into the door. Your window will not function correctly without this plastic guide.

I've also got printed bushings available on eBay if you'd prefer them delivered.

Print price estimates

Planning prices for one print, not a final quote. Defaults use a size allowance inferred from the part name, not a measured or sliced model. Filament suitability must be confirmed.

FilamentUSD / printApplication notes
PLA$21.50Indoor prototypes; not a default material for hot vehicle interiors.
PETG$21.50General-purpose candidate; heat and creep need review.
ASA$23.50Candidate for UV exposure; verify temperature and geometry.
ABS$22.50Enclosed printing; review application and dimensions.
TPU$26.00Flexible designs only; not a substitute for rigid materials.
Nylon$26.00Moisture, tolerances and application require review.
PA-CF$28.00Filled nylon; abrasive filament and fit need review.
Pricing assumptions and exclusions

USD: ($6 setup + $3 finishing + filament weight × assumed spool cost × 1.25 waste allowance + print hours × $2.50 × material time factor) ÷ 0.65. Rounded up to the next $0.50.

Assumed spool costs per kg: PLA $25, PETG $30, ASA $40, ABS $30, TPU $45, Nylon $65, PA-CF $95. Time factors: PLA/PETG 1.0, ASA/ABS 1.2, TPU 1.6, Nylon 1.4, PA-CF 1.5. These are proposed shop rates, not measured production costs.

Design work, test fitting, hardware, shipping and tax are additional where needed. Multi-file sets may need several prints. Use actual sliced weight and time when available. Final pricing is confirmed in writing.
