Description

In my '99 Corolla, there is a blank piece of plastic above the radio in the center console where a clock would have been in a different trim level. I noticed during stereo installation that the plug for the clock was still present, and that an unswitched 12v supply was present. As the cigarette lighter is inconveniently located under the drink holder, I thought this would be a good place for a 12v-USB charging connector for mobile device charging. A newer radio install added a rear-mounted USB port and an AUX in port, so I decided to replace the panel with one that would snap in place where the old one was, but offer ports that I needed.
I chose USB ports that transferred insertion force to the panel they were mounted in, and paid a ridiculously high price for them. https://www.digikey.ca/product-detail/en/amphenol-commercial-products/MUSB-A511-00/MUSB-A511-00-ND/1242675
The 3.5mm/1/8th in audio jack for AUX in was far more reasonable. http://www.btw-electronics.net/PLUGS-JACKS-ADAPTERS-CABLES-CONNECTORS/3.5mm-mono,-snap-in-type-panel-mount-phone-jack,-70-533,-philmore?sort=p.model&order=DESC&page=4&limit=50
Both connectors had the advantage of having very specific measurements for their needed cutouts online.
Some photos show an earlier prototype.
UPDATE 17 JUNE 2016: The part has begun to deform due to heat and no longer clips into the dash. This is in relatively moderate Toronto spring temperatures, so using PLA for this Thing is not advised. I will shortly print it again in high temp PLA or ABS.

Print price estimates

Planning prices for one print, not a final quote. Defaults use a size allowance inferred from the part name, not a measured or sliced model. Filament suitability must be confirmed.

FilamentUSD / printApplication notes
PLA$57.50Indoor prototypes; not a default material for hot vehicle interiors.
PETG$59.00General-purpose candidate; heat and creep need review.
ASA$69.50Candidate for UV exposure; verify temperature and geometry.
ABS$66.00Enclosed printing; review application and dimensions.
TPU$85.00Flexible designs only; not a substitute for rigid materials.
Nylon$85.00Moisture, tolerances and application require review.
PA-CF$99.00Filled nylon; abrasive filament and fit need review.
Pricing assumptions and exclusions

USD: ($6 setup + $3 finishing + filament weight × assumed spool cost × 1.25 waste allowance + print hours × $2.50 × material time factor) ÷ 0.65. Rounded up to the next $0.50.

Assumed spool costs per kg: PLA $25, PETG $30, ASA $40, ABS $30, TPU $45, Nylon $65, PA-CF $95. Time factors: PLA/PETG 1.0, ASA/ABS 1.2, TPU 1.6, Nylon 1.4, PA-CF 1.5. These are proposed shop rates, not measured production costs.

Design work, test fitting, hardware, shipping and tax are additional where needed. Multi-file sets may need several prints. Use actual sliced weight and time when available. Final pricing is confirmed in writing.
